To address the challenge of estimating the occurrence time of Tree contact Single-phase-to-ground Fault in overhead conductors, a 10 kV conductor-to-tree real-scale test platform was established. By observing the experimental phenomena, the fault development mechanism was elucidated, and the common characteristics of fault zero-sequence current rise based on the thermal effect mechanism were summarized. A method for estimating the fault initiation time of conductor-to-tree contact based on the long-time window linear coupling of the effective value of zero-sequence current was proposed. Simulation and experimental results indicate that, compared to the traditional threshold method, this approach reduces the estimation error of the fault initiation time by up to 84.51 %.
