ANOVA and Mixed Models: A Short Introduction Using R
John Addy · Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A (Statistics in Society) · 2024
The book presents a clear and easy introduction to the use of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mixed models, with examples of the use of experimental design in agricultural field trials. Concepts presented in the book have a well-thought-out narrative from basic principles of experimental design to implementing and understanding random effects. Uniquely, this book starts with a chapter called Learning from the Data which differs from other similar books on ANOVA and mixed models. In this chapter, experimental units, experimental error, and randomization and blocking are all introduced in a casual style complete with references. This is useful as it frames the context of experimental design in later chapters. In Chapters 2–8, traditional topics of experimental design are introduced, such as: completely randomized designs, contrasts and multiple testing, factorial designs, complete block designs, mixed effects models, split-plot designs, and incomplete block designs. All chapters are well presented with examples and R code in-text and minimal mathematical notation.
