Blockchain and Sustainable Supply Chains
Dariusz Dudek · 2024
The chapter titled “Blockchain and Sustainable Supply Chains” explores the integration of blockchain technology to increase the sustainability of supply chains. The author draws attention to the challenges currently facing supply chains, such as lack of transparency, lack of uniform ecological standards, and excessive consumption of natural resources. The chapter discusses the key features of blockchain technology such as security, decentralization, smart contracts, and data immutability. It also highlights how these elements can strengthen supply chain security, eliminate counterfeiting, and facilitate comprehensive monitoring at all stages of the supply chain. Much of the chapter is devoted to exploring how blockchain can actively contribute to sustainability by enabling traceability of raw materials, monitoring carbon emissions, and assessing environmental impact. Case studies are presented to highlight the impact of blockchain on sustainable supply chain projects. The chapter also examines the challenges associated with implementing blockchain technology in supply chains. However, the author argues that the benefits of using blockchain in the context of sustainable supply chains far outweigh the difficulties. An important aspect discussed in the chapter is the role of stakeholders such as customers, manufacturers, NGOs, and governments in supporting and promoting sustainable blockchain-based supply chains. The author also draws attention to the need for further research, development of standards, and education in order to effectively implement blockchain technology in supply chains, thus supporting sustainable economic development.
