Digital image processing at a glance
Euclid Seeram PhD, FCAMRT · 2021
This chapter highlights the general concepts of digital image processing which can be applied to the images produced by each of these modalities, and which are commonplace in clinical practice. Image processing is intended to enhance the visual task of interpretation of images, and the assessment of what constitutes an image of diagnostic quality. The major characteristics of a digital image include a matrix, pixels, voxels, and the bit depth. Processing operations include algorithms developed to alter the appearance of image such as point processing operations such as gray scale processing, local processing operations and global operations such as the Fourier transform. The chapter focuses on the most common of these operations, gray scale processing, also referred to as windowing. Education programs for both technologists and radiologists are also beginning to incorporate digital image processing as part of their curriculum.
