This chapter delves into the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) within the gaming domain, tracing its evolution from its beginnings with classical board games to the new breed of advanced AI algorithms that have mastered much more sophisticated video games. We explore how AI enhances the immersion and entertainment value of games and how it promises to redefine the gaming experience with future trends such as virtual reality. Beyond the important contributions of AI to the recreation of humans, we underscore the sophistication of the AI algorithms used in gaming and how games can be seen as a testing ground for real-world applications. The study starts by exploring the connection between AI and traditional board games such as chess, backgammon, and go. It then delves into the role of AI in modern video games, touching on topics such as deep reinforcement learning, non-player characters, and content adjustment. The section on the use of AI in game design discusses the use of A* (A Star), Dijkstra, and ant colony optimization algorithms for pathfinding, which is a fundamental aspect of video games. Additionally, finite state machines, genetic algorithms, and fuzzy logic techniques are used for decision-making. The final section explores future trends in AI.
