In order to further improve the spectral efficiency of pattern division multiple access (PDMA) systems, this work considers a spatial multiplexing-based high-dimensional multiple input multiple output (MIMO) uplink PDMA transmission scheme. First, the spatially multiplexed MIMO-PDMA system model is established. Second, in order to reduce the detection complexity of high-dimensional MIMO-PDMA, a symbol-wise a-priori assisted expectation-propagation algorithm (SAA-EP) and corresponding iteration-stopping-criterion is proposed, and cooperates with iterative-detection-decoding to form a SAA-EP-IDD receiver. Simulation results show that the proposed detection scheme has only about 1 dB performance gap to the belief propagation (BP) algorithm for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation, and achieves good performance and complexity tradeoff for high-order modulation.
