Artificial Intelligence and Game Theory in the Intensive Care Units

Salvador Castillo-Rivera, Ana María Castillo-Rivera · 2024

Artificial intelligence (AI) among other purposes allows us to derive patterns in different complex environments of data, which would not be found otherwise. Critical care medicine is being aided by the advent of advanced monitoring systems and several invasive and non-invasive treatment strategies. This scenario is a great chance to improve bedside care because the data are huge and complex in intensive care units (ICUs). The AI is a proper tool for the implementation of bedside care at ICUs. Nowadays, progressively clinical investigations are being carried out by AI models to handle the data in the ICUs. Nevertheless, many difficulties for AI have to be overcome before becoming an essential component of daily clinical practice. Game theory can provide a theoretical framework for developing strategic insight into complex settings such as the implementation of AI in ICUs. The management of this procedure involves model set-up and analysis with stakeholders to derive the strategic interactions within a hospital. We deal with the role of AI in ICUs due to the changes that this one should yield to the ordinary practice patterns in critical care medicine. The game theory is set out as a framework to address the current pitfalls.
