Chapter 3 deals with some of the GHz systems of today based on wireless technology. This includes radio-aids for navigation and radio detection and ranging (RADAR), satellite communication systems, and global positioning systems (GPSs). In radio-aids for navigation, this chapter discusses the principles of direction finder, very high-frequency omnidirectional range, distance measuring equipment, and tactical air navigation; instrument landing system including microwave landing system; and hyperbolic navigation system. In radar it discusses pulse Doppler and moving target indicator radar, FM–CW radar, surveillance and tracking radar, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and pulse compression radar. In satellite communication systems, this chapter discusses the principle and special system requirements of the satellite orbits for communication satellites, applications of satellite communication, and its future possibilities including a brief historical background of the developments of communication satellites. The principle of the GPS has been discussed including differential-GPS. A comparison of GPS with other long-range radio-navigation techniques has been included, and GPS applications and GPS corrections based on the general theory of relativity have been discussed in brief.
