Secure hash algorithm plays a major role to achieve the integrity in secure data communication. The SHA-3 is the recent crypto hash algorithm recognized by national institute of standards and technology. This paper proposes synchronous and asynchronous folded designs of SHA-3. The former case is to increase the throughput and the latter case is to reduce the power dissipation. Using Cadence, all of the existing and proposed designs are realized in 45 nm CMOS technology. According to the synthesis results, the proposed asynchronous folded design reduces switching power dissipation by 88.5% when compared to the existing synchronous folded design [10] with single stage pipeline. When compared to the existing architecture, the proposed synchronous folded design improves throughput by 82.7% [12].
