Survey of Vulnerabilities and Architectural Flaws in Existing Collaborative DDoS Mitigation Systems for Autonomous Systems

Shikha Garg, Sonia Goyal, Abhinav Bhandari · 2024

In the era of modern internet infrastructure, DDoS attacks create a severe threat to cyberspace. So, it is essential to mitigate these attacks by strategizing a collaborative defense mechanism that combines resources collected from various sources like ASes, ISPs, and CDNs. This paper focuses on the security aspects of Collaborative DDoS Mitigation Systems. We begin by discussing the components of Collaborative DDoS Mitigation Systems for AS in two ways: Centralized and Decentralized. Based on the centralized and decentralized approaches, the paper discusses the Vulnerable points or attack points and architectural flaws in the existing frameworks. Apart from discussing the components and vulnerabilities, the paper also conducts a deep examination of the framework to evaluate and identify the vulnerabilities and flaws linked to security, scalability, and protocols used for communications, resource management, and decision-making processes. By understanding the challenges and vulnerabilities discussed, the paper aims to contribute towards the development of more resilient as well as robust collaborative DDoS mitigation approaches for affirming the availability and integrity of critical online services.
