Integrating SEL and ELA

This chapter will illustrate how SEL and the teaching of ELA standards can be integrated using literary and informational graphic novels and illustrated texts. The chapter begins by explaining the rationale for this integration and then provides specific examples of connections between the SEL competencies and ELA standards. Text exemplars are used to demonstrate integration with each of the five CASEL SEL competencies (self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills). The chapter concludes with sample lesson plans using literary and informational texts.
