With the extensive advancement of technology, online social networks (OSNs) have become immensely popular among users in recent years. The expertise of OSNs to provide a medium for the end-users to inter-connect with their family, friends, and colleagues is the pivotal reason behind this phenomenon. The information shared on social media platforms spreads without any delay, which makes it easy for hackers to get unauthorized access to user data. Aspects of OSN trust and secrecy need to be investigated from multiple perspectives. There are numerous privacy and security issues in relation to a client&s;s information, especially when a user uploads his/her own information or details such as images, videos, and mp3 files. Hackers may use the shared data for illegal activities. The probability of getting attacked is even higher when the hackers target children or minors. To deal with these challenges, this chapter presents a comprehensive study of different security and privacy vulnerabilities and already available solutions that can defend the security of social network users. It also discusses OSN attacks on various OSN online applications using some statistical data. Further, it involves several more protective approaches to OSN security, anonymization operations, privacy-preserving data publishing, and their fundamental phases, open issues, challenges, and relevant security guidelines to achieve trustworthiness in online social networks.
