Toward a Topology of Music
Ханнанов Ильдар Дамирович · 2024
The interpretation of space in today’s music theory is derived from the line notation – Cartesian two-dimensional segmented plane. Music of post-tonal period has switched from using the notation as a mnemonic device to relying on real space. Tonal music, however, remains in the domain that is non-visualalisable and its spatiality is defined by topological categories, such as directionality, tensors, neighbourhoods, and continuous functions. Husserl, Deleuze, and Derrida revised logocentric concepts of the real space by introducing the vagabond geometry. While not universally accepted in sciences, their intentions harmonise with languages of humanities, and music in particular.
