Transforming Teaching and Learning With Natural Language Processing

Luis Pinto Coelho, Sara Reis · Advances in educational technologies and instructional design book series · 2024

In higher education (HE), the integration of Natural Language Processing (NLP) stands as a transformative force, reshaping traditional paradigms of teaching and learning. NLP systems are also able to perform tasks such as text summarization, text comparison, and personalized text generation, among others. From the teacher's perspective it is possible to have support or automate in tasks such as essay grading or materials generation, among many others. Moreover, NLP-powered intelligent tutoring systems personalize learning experiences by analyzing students' language use, identifying misconceptions, and offering targeted feedback and explanations. The adoption of NLP technology in HE holds the promise of optimizing learning outcomes, enhancing institutional efficiency, and promoting greater accessibility and inclusivity. However, despite its potential benefits, the successful implementation of NLP in HE necessitates careful consideration of ethical, privacy, and equity concerns, as well as ongoing research to address technical challenges and refine pedagogical strategies.
