Introduction to Python and R

Sam Chen, Ka Chun Cheung, Phillip Yam, Kaiser Fan · 2024

Python is similar to Java in the sense that it also handles our memory management: it allocates memory for different uses, and has the capacity to free up that memory once it is no longer needed. R is a free and integrated programming language for statistical computing and graphical display. It is widely used among probabilists, statisticians and data scientists. Python and R are two very popular programming languages for machine learning and deep learning developers, and there are hundreds of packages and libraries available online. This chapter describes some basic operations in Python and R which are essential for statistical computing. It illustrates the applications of one-way analysis of variance and Tukey Honest Significant Difference for three stock market indices, namely the S&P500, HSI, and FTSE via both Python and R.
