Tabular data is widely used in various application scenarios to organize and display structured data. The increasing popularity of mobile devices has led to a significant demand for tabular data analysis. However, limited screen space hinders the effectiveness of analyzing tabular data. To improve users’ ability to analyze tabular data on mobile devices, we develop SMARTable, a prototype system to integrate mobile devices with augmented reality techniques. SMARTable extends the screen space of mobile devices by presenting two-dimensional and three-dimensional visual information around the mobile device. In addition, it allows users to interact with multiple devices, improving the intuitiveness of visual analytics. We conduct a usability study to evaluate the efficiency of combining mobile and AR devices and the usability of the SMARTable system. The evaluation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of combining mobile devices and augmented reality techniques to analyze tabular data.
