Robot based Automated Sample Processing

Mohamed Ali Tlili, Thomas Roddelkopf, Kerstin Thurow · 2024

The level of automation in life science laboratories is still quite low today. With the development of the microtiter plate as a standard format for biological applications, numerous automation solutions have been developed. Classic analytical or diagnostic laboratories generally cannot use these developments because they process individual samples and processing in microtiter plate format is not possible. Automation systems for these applications must therefore be complex systems with central robots as transport entities. The automation of all sub-steps also requires the development and integration of special devices to realize the full required functionality.A corresponding system was developed for the sample preparation of human samples that enables the parallel processing of up to six samples per run. The developed system enables the opening and closing of vessels, the filtration of larger sample volumes and the dosing of individual volumes in the range from 30 to 90 ml.
