IBR Performance Issues: Potential Threat to Grid Stability and Security
Suresh Singh, Roman Kumar Jha · 2024
The global commitment to achieving net-zero emissions has accelerated the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources (IBRs) into power grids. The power grids are expected to see IBRs forming the major portion of the generation mix. However, IBR performance issues have recently caused several grid events, leading to a serious threat to grid stability and security. This paper brings out the potential IBR performance issues experienced by grid operators around the world. The paper reviews some of the major grid events and discusses the reasons behind the failure of IBRs connected to the grid and increasing grid instability. The paper revolves around the failures and disturbances reported in the USA and India. The paper also presents recommendations that could be helpful for various stakeholders in meeting their renewable targets while ensuring grid stability and security.
