In this paper, a comparison between three remote data recovery methods is reported. The first method is based on commercially available data recovery software, which is one of the best known on the market and has remote access capability, namely R-Studio. The second is by using free Linux software (dd imager command). The third makes use of software developed by Computer Systems (CS), which is based on free Linux software and incorporates a USB version of CSRemoter. CSRemoter is the trade name of a specially designed tool by CS that is used for remote data recovery. The results suggested that the amount of data recovered was higher using the third method. In addition, the third method enabled partial recovery of data from hard disks with hardware damage.
