Affective Displays of High-Risk Infants During Early Interactions
Tiffany Martini Field · 2024
“Brian looked at his mother’s face, found her smiling, and smiled in return. Encouraged by this, she made a funny face, tickled him on the tummy, and he laughed and looked away from her. She sighed and waited, knowing he would come back for more.” Although this same sequence occurs with some regularity on videotapes of early interactions (as is illustrated inFig. 5.1), this description of Brian at 3 months was taken from his father’s diary. A father’s diary on a high-risk infant might read very differently—probably it would describe fewer smiles and less laughter.
