Securing Private Blockchain Infrastructures: Detection and Prevention of DDoS Attacks Using Suricata

Hansa Vaghela, Vivek Khirasaria · 2024

It is crucial to ensure the security of private blockchains because they are increasingly being used in a variety of sectors, including finance and healthcare. HTTP flood-based DDoS attacks are a common kind of attack that can overwhelm a network and make it impossible for authorized users to access services. In order to make DDoS attack mitigation more flexible, effective, and cost-effective, it is possible to combine blockchain technology with the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) to distribute information about the attacker's source. This research suggests employing Suricata as a defense against HTTP flood-based DDoS attacks on private blockchains. We provide a strategy to counteract this risk by utilizing Suricata, an open-source intrusion detection and prevention system, to identify and prevent HTTP flood-based DDoS attacks on private blockchains. As part of our solution, Suricata is set up to monitor network traffic and spot trends that are indicative of HTTP flood attacks. Suricata can take aggressive action to stop an attack from succeeding after it has been identified. By simulating HTTP flood-based DDoS attacks on a private blockchain network and analyzing Suricata's capacity to identify and prevent them, we assess the efficacy of our solution. Our findings demonstrate the efficiency of our technology in identifying and thwarting HTTP flood-based DDoS attacks against private blockchains. In order to strengthen their security and defend against this frequent type of attack, our technology is simple to integrate into already-existing blockchain networks.
