Traditionally, manufacturers have rigorously tested devices to determine whether they meet corporate performance specifications or standards set by organizations such as the American Society for Testing Materials or Underwriters Laboratories. To determine if it will stand up to conditions of actual use, a device may be alternately chilled and heated, vibrated for many hours, or dropped at various angles from a set height.
