Some Subdomains of Artificial Intelligence

Chuck Brooks · 2024

This chapter describes some of the subdomains of artificial intelligence (AI). These include: machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and cognitive computing. The chapter introduces two of the enabling components of AI are introduced, followed by a list of common terms used in the discipline. ML and NLP are two of the enabling components of AI that are commonly present in our daily lives. These days, AI does not need to be specially designed to comprehend, diagnose, and, in some situations, solve issues. To understand AI, it is useful to be familiar with the most common terms used in the discipline: algorithm, artificial neural networks, cognitive science, deep learning, and expert system. Understanding the components of AI is integral to developing strategies and applications for industry uses and, of course, for cybersecurity. The chapter concludes with a graphic showing how AI works.
