Distance‐Bounding Protocols
David Gérault, Pascal Lafourcade, Léo Robert · 2024
Autonomous vehicles must guarantee a sufficient level of security for the good of the actors involved in this context, such as users, manufacturers, and companies offering services. The various current technological components communicate using protocols. If these protocols are not built correctly, then security flaws will allow attackers to jeopardize the guarantees. This chapter focus on a specific class of protocol called Distance-Bounding (DB) protocol. In wireless communications, they make it possible to ensure that entities have valid behavior in a defined geographical area. In the scientific literature, there exist several threat models, depending on the power and objective of the intruder: distance fraud, mafia fraud, terrorist fraud, impersonation fraud, and distance hijacking. The chapter also presents a comparison of various DB protocols that offer different compromises between security, performance and privacy.
