Most American companies have not met the inflation test of doubling sales in the last 6⅓ years. (To stay level in real terms.) Market segments have been shrinking, while employment remained stagnant or increased. This picture shows a national average toward decreasing productivity, which led to massive layoffs in the steel and automotive industries. If American industries are to survive or grow, we must reevaluate our use of capital and people.
