Counting: 0, 1, 2

Hitomezashi pattern instructions are generally given as charts, but in this chapter a different way of specifying them, using strings of binary digits, is developed. In a small sampler, some of the mathematical features of hitomezashi that will be explored in more detail in the subsequent chapters is introduced. Although hitomezashi is worked throughout the book as a form of counted thread embroidery, many of its features can be classified simply by counting 0, 1, 2. In particular, the digits 0 and 1 specify the state of lines of stitching. Every internal vertex connected by stitching has degree 2, and the chromatic number of the patterns is 2.
