Computational problem solving in STEM education
Timothy Lehmann · 2024
Computational thinking skills are critical in the process of solving STEM problems. This chapter provides an in-depth examination of seven essential computational thinking skills—decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, generalization, algorithmic thinking, debugging, and iteration—and their interconnected functions in the problem-solving process. By juxtaposing problem-solving processes and heuristics from mathematics education with computational thinking skills, the chapter reveals how the former provides the foundation for enhancing problem solving in STEM with computational tools. Examples from empirical research are provided to enhance the general descriptions given in the existing literature, which will serve as a comprehensive resource for educators and students.
