In software development, requirement engineering (RE) is crucial for ensuring the quality of software. During software development, various methods of RE can be used to handle process requirements, one of which is agile RE. Agile RE can mitigate issues associated with traditional RE approaches. However, like any methodology, agile RE has its challenges, particularly in the validation phase, which has the highest failure rate in software development. Despite its importance, there is limited knowledge about the specific approaches and challenges of agile RE. Our goal is to map out the commonly used approaches and the challenges in agile RE practices, with a focus on the validation phase. We conducted a systematic review of literature published between August 2010 and November 2020, identifying 27 papers that discuss the validation phase in agile requirements engineering. The review revealed eight approaches, and four challenges associated with the validation phase in agile RE. Although agile RE has its challenges, our findings suggest that it is more effective than traditional RE in validating requirements and faces fewer challenges in the validation phase.
