A Tool for Detecting Web Content Changes When Preparing for Offline Tutorial Documents
Minjie Hu · 2024
When the content of a web page is updated, the offline tutorial document based on the web page may be inconsistent with the web page. This study aims to design and develop a software tool to help tutorial authors addressing the challenge of inconsistencies between offline tutorial documents and web contents.Adopting design science approach, we started from exploring others' research findings. While web crawler technology and two widely used testing tools, Wachete and VisualPing, show potential in the literature, they are unsuitable for addressing the problem in this study due to limitations in accuracy and user-friendliness.Instead, Selenium Web Driver was identified more suitable in this study than Cypress in terms of XPath features. Therefore, a tool for detecting Web content changes was designed and implemented. To further evaluate the tool's effectiveness, self-assessments were conducted. The findings indicated that the proposed testing tool can effectively detect changes in relevant web page elements. The contribution of this study is that it provides practical experience and feasible solutions for other researchers to address this issue.
