Model-Based Design for Direction Finding with Phase Comparison

Sourabh Joshi, Shashank Kulkarni, Giorgia Zucchelli · 2024

Direction-finding is used in many applications to locate the source of emissions of RF and microwave signals. Direction-finding can be done using analog or digital techniques. The analog implementation using phase comparison is discussed in this paper. The system simulation for this direction-finding technique is also shown in this paper using the RF Blockset model. The antenna is integrated with the RF channel to simulate an entire system. Phase comparison can be achieved using many different antenna configurations and array architectures. This paper uses a linear array of spiral antennas at the receiver. The phase difference between the antennas is used to detect the angle of arrival (ADA). The model offers rapid prototyping for the antenna and RF components, and different scenarios can be easily simulated. The model also considers impedance mismatches between the blocks, and the power transmitted and received can be accurately modelled.
