Improving On-the-fly Race Detection for Message-Passing Programs1

Mi-Young Park, Young‐Cheol Kim, Moon-Hye Kang, Yong-Kee Jun · 2022

Detecting the first race to occur in each process is important to debugging message-passing programs effectively, because such a message race may affect other races in the same process. The previous techniques to detect such races require more than two monitored runs of a program or analyze a trace file which size is proportional to the number of messages. This paper introduces an new on-the-fly technique to detect the first race to occur in each process without generating a trace file. Detecting first races helps avoid overwhelming the programmer with too much debugging information.
