As cyber-attacks grow increasingly sophisticated, the need for advanced training and testing platforms has become paramount. Cyber Ranges (CRs) have emerged as crucial tools in the cybersecurity domain, offering simulated environments for professionals to refine their skills and test defensive strategies. Effective cybersecurity relies heavily on Situational Awareness (SA). Despite the critical importance of SA, current methodologies for performance evaluation in CRs often overlook this aspect, focusing instead on overall participant performance. The present research describes a dynamic Situational Awareness Scoring System (SASS) within the context of CR platforms and the development of robust methods to assess SA, accounting for the complexity and variability of simulated environments. This research highlights the necessity of dynamic scoring methods tailored to the unique demands of SA assessment, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of cybersecurity training in CRs.
