How the Scientific Study of Reading Can Inform Teaching Part I: Understanding Models of Skilled Reading and How We Get There
J. Richard Gentry, Gene P. Ouellette · 2024
This chapter presents an updated and highly readable overview of reading theory and research from the science of reading. Starting from a model of skilled reading, the question is posed: how do we get there? Several important lessons are derived from models of skilled reading, foremost how sounding out/decoding and sight word reading happen together. Then the chapter progresses to leading developmental theory that has much to teach about teaching developing readers. In this newly revised and updated chapter, developmental phases of reading, self-teaching, and orthographic learning are all detailed, leading to the crux of this book—building brain words for reading and writing success.
