Corpora and Translation Quality Assessment

Juliane House · 2024

In this chapter I first present a classic model for translation quality assessment in which corpora play an integral role. I then provide readers with an insight into a research project which involved special domain diachronic parallel and comparable corpora and which featured three consecutive but interlocked phases of research. In the first qualitative phase, textual monolingual and comparative work was undertaken using the translation quality assessment model; the second phase is then devoted to quantitative corpus work, and in the third phase a new qualitative phase ensues, featuring detailed analyses of all those phenomena which the previous quantitative analysis has shown to be salient for the research question(s) on hand. Finally, I describe several smaller corpus-based studies relevant to globalisation processes in which the translation assessment model is also employed. All these studies can be regarded as examples of fruitfully integrating translation quality assessment with corpus work.
