Unravelling blackhole attacks in MANETs: A comprehensive analysis

Ayush Gupta, Saumya Rajvanshi, Gurleen Kaur · Computational Methods in Science and Technology · 2024

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have become very important in situations where traditional communication infrastructure is either not available or impossible to implement. However, their decentralization and dynamism expose them to a range of security threats among which blackhole attacks are one of the most dangerous. Malicious nodes may drop packets intentionally, therefore affecting important communication channels. This analysis seeks to address the pressing need for strong security measures in MANETs, with a extensive focus on prevention of blackhole attacks. To this end, existing techniques and algorithms developed to solve this problem are analyzed extensively. Exploring these methods step by step considering how effective, resourceful and flexible they can be within the parameters of dynamic MANET environment. Important discussions about advantages and disadvantages of intrusion detection systems (IDS), trust-based routing protocols (TBRP), cryptography techniques as well as hybrid approaches are discussed throughout the paper. Further reviewing developments over recent years in mitigating blackhole attack is also presented in this paper. Thus, reviewing various strategies on how best to detect and prevent intrusions into MANETs based on information that should help researchers participate in formulating solutions to that effect as well as assist network administrators and practitioners in designing more efficient solutions for protecting secured data transmission by those who need it using improved methods such as IDS , TBRP etc., This research is a vital tool for design and implementation of secure protocols in dynamic self-organizing wireless networks. It also protects these networks from blackhole attacks while ensuring safety of important communications.
