Coordinating the moving parts

Victoria Carr · 2024

As leaders, we have to start (and, more importantly, maintain) plate spinning whilst also maintaining morale and momentum, energy and drive, whilst also keeping an eye on the deadlines and timeframes, the objectives and the cash flow. We develop and possess so many transferable skills because of these constant demands, and yet none of us really thinks we do! This chapter exemplifies how we have managed to maintain the plate spinning at Woodlands, from which plate to start with, how to empower others to keep plates spinning whilst you start on others and how you pick up the pieces of broken plate when it goes wrong – which it is likely to at some point! These are all useful things to consider and reflect upon if you are new to leadership or considering it (particularly in challenging schools where there are so many plates that need to be picked up and spun).
