In the software defined network with multiple controllers, a logically centralized and physically distributed cluster of controllers is used to manage the switches throughout the network, achieving good scalability and management flexibility. However, the performance and security of the control plane are threatened by unbalanced network traffic requests, external attacks, and network failures. Therefore, for the problem of distributed controller load balancing and failures in software defined network, this paper proposes a dynamic decision load balancing and failure handling mechanism for SDN. Firstly, each controller will synchronise the load information and switch information of its domain to the distributed database. Then the decision controller is selected to determine the migration operation of the switch under overload or failure controller using the proposed multi-constrained load balancing algorithm and failure handling mechanism. Simulation results show that the research in this paper can effectively improve the load balancing of each controller, and it can also improve the throughput performance of the controller plane.
