The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into transportation systems has given rise to the concept of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) in smart transportation. IoV holds the potential to enhance road safety, traffic efficiency, and overall transportation management. However, the increased connectivity of vehicles also introduces new challenges related to security and privacy. This section delves into the exploration of blockchain technology as a robust solution for ensuring the security of the Internet of Vehicles. Renowned for its decentralized and tamper-resistant attributes, blockchain provides a secure and transparent framework for managing the vast amounts of data generated by interconnected vehicles. The immutability of blockchain safeguards data integrity preventing unauthorized access and tampering. In the IoV context, this translates to a reliable and secure communication network among vehicles, infrastructure, and other stakeholders. This segment discusses how blockchain can address crucial safety issues in IoV, such as secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, data authenticity, and secure software updates. Leveraging smart contracts on the blockchain facilitates the execution of automated and secure transactions ensuring that only authorized entities can access and interact within the IoV ecosystem. Furthermore, the document examines the importance of consensus mechanisms in blockchain to establish trust in a decentralized environment. Consensus mechanisms play a key role in deterring malicious activities ensuring the integrity and reliability of the IoV ecosystem. Therefore, the proposed blockchain-based solution aims to enhance the safety and security of smart transportation systems by providing a resilient and trustworthy framework for IoV. Potential benefits include a reduced risk of cyber-attacks, strengthened privacy protections, and enhanced overall system resilience. The chapter concludes with a discussion on potential challenges and future research directions in implementing blockchain for the safety of the Internet of Vehicles in smart transportation.
