Enabling Information-Centric Web Services with a Web Server

Peirui Li · 2024

The drastic increase in Internet traffic has led to the emergence of different Internet architectures to serve content delivery and user demand. Traditional architectures such as web cache and Content Delivery Networking (CDN), have high deployment costs and require several steps to process users' requests. Also, there is a conflict that these architectures focused on content in the network but were designed to apply web services in host-to-host networks, so they cannot support dynamic network scenarios well. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) can address the limitations and better support web services based on content rather than location. In this paper, we proposed a web server, which enables Information-Centric web services. It takes advantage of ICN, which integrates content delivery as a native network feature. To combine web services semantics and ICN semantics, we design Information-Centric web semantics, presenting in ICN Name and packet directly. We also design Information-Centric web primitives to realize different types of web services in the web server. The evaluation demonstrates that this approach provides a practical solution to enable information-centric web services in the web server.
