Sciences of sound design

Nicolas Misdariis · Focal Press eBooks · 2024

The reflection is focused on sound design, an up-and-coming discipline situated at a crossroads between artistic creation and scientific and technological research. We take an interest in sound design as a discipline in its own right on which we are able to gain intrinsic knowledge, be it theoretical or practical. We start from the assumption that strong interactions exist with the design discipline, and we investigate their nature and form in order to extend the issue of research in sound design and to propose for it a widened conceptual frame. For that, we refer to some formalisms duly settled in design research to claim a form of sciences of sound design addressing four elementary questions:Â who, how, what and for whom? This approach aims at better surrounding this field of study, but also at contributing in a singular way to design research, by questioning shared methods and tools.
