Sensor Networks Overview

Adwitiya Sinha, Manju, Samayveer Singh · 2024

A wireless sensor network (WSN) performs large-scale collection of data from low-power electronic devices known as sensors. These devices are usually deployed in abundance in the area to be monitored. This chapter provides an overview of the characteristics and open challenges associated with sensor networking. It surveys the wide range of applications, standards, mobility models, and advanced architectures. Energy conservation is the prime objective of sensor networks; therefore, this chapter illustrates the use of the standard model employed for energy consumption analysis. It also highlights clustering and coverage aspects with the help of various emerging methodologies, including metaheuristics and reinforcement techniques.
