New levels of efficiency and resilience are being introduced to industrial engineering by the merging of artificial intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and edge computing. By moving processing closer to the data source, edge computing eliminates the need for slow cloud connections and allows for real-time decision-making. Decentralisation reduces bandwidth and latency limitations, while IIoT sensors collect massive volumes of operational data, which is AI&s;s transformational powerhouse. AI programmes automate activities, optimise processes, and detect equipment breakdowns by analysing this data in real-time. This results in less downtime, better use of resources, and higher quality products. On the other hand, security risks must not be disregarded. Greater exposure is a risk that comes along with more connectedness. Strong encryption and access restrictions at the edge, along with AI for anomaly detection and threat prediction, are becoming critical. Industrial engineers can achieve the full potential of the disruptive trifecta of edge-IIoT-AI by adding these security safeguards to its foundation, guaranteeing a future of production that is both secure and optimised.
