Machine Learning and Cyber Defense: Hype Vs. Reality

Modern businesses need to secure crucial assets, ranging from critical infrastructures to personal information, from cyber-attacks while achieving optimized business processes. Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used with huge potential to support information security. Machine learning (ML) can be utilized to prevent our information from a number of attacks, but this is not an acceptable solution. The technology also helps to combine all customer data, which serves as input to produce new vulnerabilities. Different opinions consider it as a game between attackers and security providers. In this chapter, we discuss the application areas, true potential, and limitations of ML. ML-based technologies are improving business processes by providing opportunities to design defense mechanisms against large-scale frauds. However, attackers can also misuse it to launch new threats. We demonstrate the ways of utilizing ML by both defenders and attackers. An extensive review and experiments performed on real enterprise systems are taken into account to draw conclusions.
