E-Learning – A Way for Bridging the Digital Divide in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

K. Venkatesan · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2024

Passing on knowledge is as important today as it was in the past. Unfortunately, still, in a few places in our country, the impact of a traditional classroom is limited to the number of heads it can accommodate. But, the present technology boom especially during COVID-19 has given access to education for all through which education is no longer limited to the local geography. Building world-class educational infrastructure and housing qualified faculty and educators in the distant Andaman and Nicobar Islands have always been challenging. With little connectivity with the Indian mainland, the Bay Islands have struggled to maintain a competitive educational environment. The last decade has transformed the education medium radically. Computer-based learning and digital collaboration offer flexible learning opportunities to the residents of these groups of islands. This chapter will focus on the avenues that digital learning can open for the natives. We’ll discuss the various E-learning methods to help students with their educational goals and future aspirations. In addition, candidates have access to world-class study material and faculties from around the globe. However, E-learning comes with a bag of problems. Apart from the usual barriers of distance learning, which include lack of social interaction, self-motivation, and inaccessibility, the island poses additional challenges that we’ll cover in this chapter.
