Phenomenological-Based Semi-Physical Models

Hernán Álvarez · 2024

This chapter presents a discussion about the most used family of mathematical models, the phenomenological-based semi-physical models (PBSMs). In spite of its wide use in process and biological engineering, the family of PBSM has not a full formalization. In addition, existing procedures to obtain a PBSM are complex, letting to the modeler some critical decision not totally clear for beginners. A formalization proposal is presented here describing in detail a modeling methodology using the known continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) benchmark as modeled process. Three final examples of modeling hypothesis and process partitions, used in published PBSM, are presented to show the methodology applicability and to motivate new works using this kind of models.
