SECURING IOT NETWORKS: PROBLEMS AND FIXES FOR KEEPING IOT DEVICES AND NETWORKS SAFE
International Research Journal of Modernization in Engineering Technology and Science · 2024
The rapid expansion of IoT devices has revolutionized various sectors, including health industry, smart homes, and industry automation. However, this widespread integration of IoT technology has also introduced important security challenges that demand urgent attention. This paper delves into the critical issues associated with securing IoT networks and presents a comprehensive analysis of contemporary solutions designed to address these concerns.IoT networks are inherently vulnerable due to their extensive and heterogeneous nature, which includes a wide array of devices with varying capabilities and security postures. The primary challenges identified include inadequate security measures at the device level, the complexity of network architecture, and the increased attack surface resulting from the sheer number of connected devices. These vulnerabilities expose IoT networks to a spectrum of cyber threats like hacking, data leaks, and harmful attacks. To counter these challenges, several strategies and technologies have been proposed.Device authentication and authorization protocols are essential for ensuring that only legal devices and users can access the network.Encryption techniques, both at rest and in transit, are crucial for protecting sensitive data from interception and tampering.Additionally, network segmentation and intrusion detection systems can help in identifying and mitigating potential threats before they impact the system. The findings underscore the necessity for a multi-layered security approach and proactive management strategies to safeguard IoT ecosystems against evolving threats.Ultimately, securing IoT networks is a dynamic and continuous process that requires continual adaptation to new vulnerabilities and attack vectors. This paper contributes to the discourse by offering actionable insights and recommendations for improving IoT security infrastructure.
