Single-shot quantum error correction in intertwined toric codes

Charles Stahl · Physical review. B./Physical review. B · 2024

Ordinary fault-tolerant quantum memories, such as the toric code, require many rounds of measurements before a single round of error correction can be performed. On the other hand, single-shot quantum memories require only a single round (``shot'') of measurements per round of correction. Using physical motivations, the author shows here how to build a single-shot quantum memory out of ordinary toric codes, allowing for connections to toric code physics including the confinement and deconfinement of anyons.
