Gendered Use of Mobile Technology among Young Children in Urban India

Anjula Srivastava, Datye Vinita · 2024

Mobile technology has revolutionised the world in recent years and helped narrow the digital divide. However, digitally mediated environments replicate offline social inequalities and amplify existing social stratifications. Traditionally, women and girls are the more marginalised gender and thus also the ones who face a greater level of digital divide. In this chapter, we examine the differences in access and use of mobile phones and the internet among boys and girls from different socio-economic groups. This research highlights that gender plays an important role in shaping experiences with mobile technologies among young urban citizens. The gender gap may narrow among the higher socio-economic groups, but it does not completely disappear.
