This paper presents a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) using two-dimensional chaotic maps, called the chaos-based PRNG. The proposed PRNG generates a secure key stream. According to important properties of the discretized Cat and Standard maps, combining a nonlinearized permutation layer on bits and a linear mixing layer on bytes effectively creates pseudo-random number sequences. The stream cipher from the chaos-based PRNG is an effective alternative for low-complexity encryption of sensitive information in multimedia data. Encryption is performed in the video slices and images, where an identified Region Of Interest (ROI) is encrypted. The results obtained from the practical tests indicate the robustness of the proposed stream cipher.
