SDN and NFV security challenges and solutions for minimizing failures in IoT networks

Software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) are two recent and innovative technologies. SDN is based on the separation of control functions and data transfer functions in the network hardware. It establishes the programmability of the network orchestrated by controllers, while NFV is based on the principle of dissociation of functions in the hardware. NFV makes it possible to reduce equipment costs and to increase network operational efficiency and scalability. All the previous articles address SDN and NFV in a very specific direction, hence the need to have a comprehensive overview of SDN and NFV. Although the two technologies seem to be different, they can be integrated into each other. The purpose of our research is to present these two technologies, to identify their advantages, to show their use in other technologies, and to highlight their security limitations. For this aim we have done a systematic literature review of the studies from 2018 to 2022, and it appears that although these technologies bring a lot of advantages to the network in general and to security in particular, and despite the fact that they are widely appreciated in technologies such as 5G and the internet of things (IoT), they generate other security flaws.
